Mass, weight and why nobody minds
Strictly, a kilogram measures mass and a pound as commonly used measures weight, which is a force. Mass is how much matter something contains and does not change; weight is how hard gravity pulls on it and would be different on the Moon. Physicists keep them apart carefully.
Everywhere else the distinction is ignored, and reasonably so. Gravity varies by less than half a percent across the surface of the Earth, so a conversion from kilograms to stone gives the same answer in Delhi as in London. Scales are calibrated for that and the error never surfaces.
The definitions themselves are exact. The pound has been fixed at 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959, and the kilogram itself was redefined in 2019 in terms of the Planck constant rather than a metal cylinder in a vault outside Paris. The factor of 0.157473044418 follows directly from those definitions.
Rounding a kilograms figure sensibly
Most weight conversions end up on a form, a label or a medical record, and each has its own sensible precision. A body weight quoted to two decimal places of a st is meaningless, because your weight moves further than that between morning and evening. One decimal place is already generous.
Where precision genuinely matters is dosing and shipping. Medication calculated per unit of body weight should carry the converted figure through unrounded until the final dose, and a courier charging by weight band will happily push you into the next band over a rounding you introduced yourself.
Scales are the other limit. Most read to the nearest gram or the nearest eighth of an ounce, so the honest answer for a recipe is whatever your scale can display, not the six decimal places the factor of 0.157473044418 would allow.
