Temperature is the only conversion on this site with two steps, and the reason is that the two scales disagree about both the size of a degree and where zero sits. A Fahrenheit degree is five ninths the size of a Celsius one, and Fahrenheit puts the freezing point of water at 32 rather than 0.

So you scale first and shift second. Twenty degrees Celsius times 1.8 is 36, plus 32 gives 68 °F. Doing it the other way round, adding before multiplying, produces a badly wrong answer, and it is the single most common mistake people make here.

The rough method is to double and add thirty. It is accurate around room temperature and drifts badly at the extremes: at 100 °C it gives 230 instead of 212.

The formula

The two scales meet at minus forty degrees and differ by exactly 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit for every degree Celsius, with the freezing point of water sitting at 0 °C and 32 °F.

To go the other way: °C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8

Why three scales exist at all

Fahrenheit came first, in 1724, built around a freezing brine mixture at zero and roughly human body temperature near ninety six. Celsius followed in 1742 and anchored itself to something everyone could reproduce: water freezing and boiling, zero and a hundred. Kelvin arrived in 1848 and moved zero to the coldest temperature physically possible.

Celsius won almost everywhere because its reference points are easy to reproduce in any laboratory. Fahrenheit survives in the United States and a handful of other places, largely through habit rather than any technical argument. Converting celsius to fahrenheit means moving between two of those histories.

Modern definitions have moved on again. Since 2019 both the kelvin and, through it, the Celsius degree have been defined by the Boltzmann constant rather than by the properties of water, so the scales no longer depend on measuring anything physical at all.

Where an approximate celsius reading goes wrong

Temperature is the conversion where mental shortcuts fail most visibly, because the two step formula means an error compounds instead of staying proportional. Doubling and adding thirty is close around room temperature and out by eighteen degrees at boiling point.

For a weather forecast, a degree either way changes nothing. For an oven it changes a bake, which is why the chart above gives exact figures rather than dial settings. For anything medical, use the exact conversion: the gap between 38.0 and 38.5 degrees Celsius is the difference between a mild and a notable fever, and that is under one degree Fahrenheit.

In scientific work, carry the full conversion through the calculation and round only the printed result. Rounding a temperature before a thermodynamic step can move the final answer by several percent.
